Dry Suit
When it comes to specific and weather appropriate apparel, the dry suit is one of the most
widely used because of its benefits and features. Men as well as women who are professional water sports athletes,
those who are in the armed forces, the coast guard, and many others all need the dry suit for protection and
safety.
Among the most important functions of the dry suit is thermal protection. The dry suit acts as a
shield against the extreme temperature that prevails under water. The use of this very specific apparel is
necessary in order to protect the organs from shutting down while the diver/swimmer is underwater. The body will
remain insulated and will therefore be able to function normally.
The dry suit is generally used only in cold water primarily because of its warming effect, which
can be uncomfortable when worn in a hotter environment.
The components of a dry suit and their corresponding function are as follows:
1- Shell- This part is made of membrane type material. This has the function of keeping the suit
dry.
2- Membrane- This is technically the body of the dry suit. It gives the suit its shape and form
which is very important.
3- Neoprene- This is responsible for the buoyancy effect of the suit.
4- Waterproof entry- this feature is designed specifically to trap air inside the dry suit
without letting water get inside.
5- Thermal Undersuits- These are optional parts of the dry suit. They are designed for going
under ice water. In certain rescue missions operated in either ends of the world, these undersuits have proven to
be essential in keeping members of rescue teams alive.
6- Gloves and mitts- These are also helpful in keeping the body warm. Mostly, the hands are the
first parts of the body to get frostbite because of icy water so specially designed gloves and mitts are
necessary.
7- Hoods- Offers head protection
8- Helmets- Additional head protection. The brain may be affected by injury if there is an
accident as well as extreme temperature, which means that due protection, is needed.
9- Boots and Weight boots- These are primarily used in order to maintain position in the water
and counteract the buoyancy of the dry suit.
Kinds of Dry suit according to use:
1- Military dry suit- Underwater missions
2- Thermal Dry suit- For going under icy water
3- Generic- For general use
Dry suits can be very expensive which is why you have to be very careful in choosing which one
to buy. Government agencies also have long-standing agreements with manufacturers of these suits and they do not
purchase from any other seller.
For individual use, if for instance you are a diver or enjoy snorkelling, you will need a suit
that would fit exactly what your needs are. Make sure that you only buy a high-grade quality dry suit in order to
ensure your protection underwater.
As mentioned before, dry suits can cost a lot of money; however, they are considered a wise
investment. Choose the best dry suit on the market according to your budget and requirements and check out many
options before you buy one.
